Low EMF baby monitors: are wifi monitors actually safe?

If you’re shopping for a low EMF baby monitor, the internet has two loud answers: buy something marketed as zero radiation, or skip wifi entirely. We bought a meter and tested 11 monitors. Neither answer held up.

The five lowest readings we recorded all came from wifi monitors. Two of the monitors could run with wifi on or off, and switching it off barely moved them. The single highest reading we got from any monitor was still 629 times below the FCC’s public exposure limit.

When parents ask the question, “are wifi baby monitors safe?” They’re really asking 4 questions:

  1. Can wifi baby monitors be hacked?
  2. What happens when my wifi goes out?
  3. What about EMF radiation?
  4. Ok, given all this, what monitors should I actually consider buying?

We’re going to dive into all 4 of these topics. But, spoiler alert, we think questions 2, 3, and 4 deserve most of your attention.

As of August 2026 we measured 11 baby monitors with a TriField TF2. The lowest EMF baby monitor we recorded was the Nanit Pro at 0.43 mW/m² peak at two feet, about 23,000 times below the FCC public exposure limit. Miku Pro measured 0.57 and Harbor 0.68. The highest headline figure was BabySense, a non-wifi monitor, at 13.25 mW/m². A wifi router at two feet read 18.30, hotter than every monitor we tested. On the two dual-mode units we could run with wifi on or off, switching wifi off moved them about 10% and 31%. Keep any baby monitor at least 6 feet from the crib. That step still does more than brand choice.

Question 1: Are wifi baby monitors secure? What about hacking?

Consider the following:

  1. Just about any device connected to the internet is hackable
  2. This includes wifi baby monitors
  3. Non-wifi monitors can also be hacked, but this requires physical proximity and higher skill
  4. A wifi monitor’s security also depends on your wifi network security
  5. There’s no financial incentive for hacking a baby monitor. You can’t extract money from the monitor, or from a baby
  6. Wifi baby monitor companies know that parents are very worried about hacking. So, the big brands (see below) have put tons of money and research into security. All things considered, they’re probably over-engineered from a security perspective.

You are welcome to draw your own conclusion from these statements. Here’s our take: wifi baby monitor hacking is kind of like shark attacks… if the shark had no teeth and the tensile jaw strength of your neighbor’s Chihuahua. That is to say:

  • Extremely rare
  • Still scary
  • Even if it happens, you’re all gonna be fine
Action plan: buy from a reputable company, whether you choose wifi or non-wifi. Buying the cheapest monitor on Amazon ain’t gonna cut it. Our picks below.

Question 2: what happens if my wifi goes out?

Wifi baby monitor companies LOVE to brag about signal quality and 4k resolution. But here’s the thing: a wifi monitor is only as strong as its weakest link. And for most monitors, that’s your wifi network. So, if your wifi sucks or has dead spots or outages—your monitor’s going to as well.

There’s one more potential weak link you also need to worry about with most wifi monitors: your phone, and the monitor’s app. If you’ve got notifications silenced or if the monitor’s app is buggy, you’ve got problems.

Knowing this, here’s what your plan needs to be:

  1. Test the location(s) you plan to have your baby sleep before buying a wifi monitor. Pro tip here: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies sleep in their parents room (though NOT their parents bed) for the first 6 months. So, if you have trouble watching Netflix in bed, chances are your monitor’s gonna have problems. Go ahead and test the nursery for months 7 onward, too.
  2. Choose a reputable brand that’s thought through notification strategy and invested in a high quality app for your phone or iPad.
  3. Consider a monitor with a dedicated “parent unit” (screen). All non-wifi monitors have these, but there are now a few wifi monitor companies that offer dedicated screens, too—more on that below.

The lowest EMF baby monitors we tested

Here’s the short version, ranked by peak RF power density at two feet, which is about as close as a monitor should ever get to a crib.

Empty room measured 0.059 peak. The FCC public exposure limit is 10,000. Peak is the higher of two meter orientations, because the meter’s RF sensor reads on a single axis and under-reads anything not lined up with it. Sustained is the mean of every standard sample across both orientations. The Eufy E21 and Momcozy BM04 each run in wifi and non-wifi modes; their figures average the isolated modes. Two smart bassinets, the SNOO and the Cradlewise, were measured in contact with the unit rather than at two feet, so they aren’t ranked here. Both are in the FAQ.

Read that last column. The top six are wifi monitors. The bottom five are either non-wifi units or dual-mode units that read high in both modes.

Nanit Pro — lowest EMF baby monitor we measured. 0.43 mW/m² peak at two feet as of August 2026, about 23,000 times below the FCC public exposure limit and roughly seven times an empty room. Nanit’s pitch is that its directional antenna aims the signal away from the crib, and the meter agrees with the marketing. It’s also been our top monitor pick for years on the things that have nothing to do with EMF, so you aren’t trading away a good monitor to get a low number.

Miku at 0.57 and Harbor at 0.68 are close enough that the difference is academic. Harbor is the one I keep pushing lately because it has a dedicated parent unit and falls back to a local network when your wifi drops, which answers question 2 and question 3 at the same time.

If your heart is set on a non-wifi monitor, the best of them is the VTech at 5.21 mW/m² peak at two feet. Our best non-wifi pick reads about 12 times hotter than our best wifi pick. Buy it because you want a closed system with no app, not because you think you’re lowering exposure. You aren’t.

Do not buy the BabySense. It measured 13.25 mW/m² peak at two feet, 30 times the Nanit, and its sustained average of 4.31 is 85 times the Nanit’s. That sustained number is the one that should bother you: BabySense isn’t spiking occasionally, it’s sitting there. It also finished near the bottom of our non-wifi testing on everything else. Bad at the thing it advertises, bad at the things it doesn’t.

How this compares to the rest of your house

A number like 13.25 means nothing on its own. So while we had the meter out, we pointed it at the things already sitting in the room.

Two things.

The router in your living room read hotter at two feet than every monitor we tested. So did the phone you hold against your skull. Walk the router out to five feet and it’s still hotter than nine of the eleven monitors. If you’re worried enough about RF exposure to be researching monitors, the monitor isn’t where your exposure is coming from.

The good monitors are closer to an empty room than to your phone. The Nanit at two feet reads about seven times an empty room. Your phone against your head reads 257 times an empty room.

None of this means exposure is zero, or that the FCC limit is the right limit for a baby. It’s built around tissue heating in adults, not infant brain development. Fair to be unhappy with that. It does mean the ranking of things worth worrying about probably isn’t the one you showed up with.

Question 3: what about wifi baby monitors and EMF radiation?

If you’ve ever Googled “WiFi baby monitor radiation,” you know it’s a minefield of fear-mongering, marketing spin, and confusing science. Instead of trying to sort internet fact from fiction, I tested some of the most popular monitors myself, using a professional EMF meter and a repeatable setup. My goal? A definitive answer to a question parents have been asking for years—are wifi baby monitors safe, or do they emit harmful EMF radiation?

This is the companion blog post to our video — breaking down how we tested, what we measured, what the science says about those numbers, and how our results compare with published research.

How I tested

  • Meter used: TriField TF2 (RF mode, measuring in mW/m²).
  • Devices tested: Nanit Pro, Miku Pro, Harbor, Cradlewise, Owlet, Cubo, vtech, Babysense, HelloBaby, Momcozy BM-04. As benchmarks: a cell phone and a WiFi router.
  • Setup:
    • Monitors mounted as they would be in real life.
    • Distances tested: 2′ (approximate Cradlewise crib placement) and 5′ (Nanit wall-mount placement).
    • Benchmarks (phone and router) also tested at contact (0″), 2′, and 5′.
    • Meter placed at pillow height (baby’s head position), pointed up at the monitor.
    • Monitors set to video streaming ON.
  • Recording: For each run, we logged:
    • Average (big bottom number): a rolling time average, sampled at 1s, 10s, 20s, and 30s, then reported as the median.
    • Peak (tiny top-left number): the largest burst captured in that window.

What the science tells us

How to read the numbers:

  • Inverse square law: RF power falls quickly with distance. Move from 0″ to 2′ to 5′ and the readings collapse, even when the device is powerful.
  • Bursty transmissions: WiFi and phones don’t transmit smoothly. They fire short bursts of high power, which show up in the Peak number. That’s why the Peak ÷ Avg ratio is often 5–10×.
  • Relative scale: Phones and routers are much noisier than baby monitors.
    • Phones at contact: peaks ~15.19 mW/m².
    • Routers at 2′: peaks ~18.30 mW/m² (contact was off-scale); at 5′: ~7.70.
    • Baby monitors at 2′–5′: peaks <3 mW/m², averages <0.3.
The obvious takeaway from these relative scale numbers: 1) don’t put your phone up to your baby’s ear so she can hear grandma talk to her. And, don’t put a wifi router near where your baby is sleeping.

Context: The FCC/ICNIRP public exposure limit is 10,000 mW/m² averaged over time. None of these devices come close. The concern for baby monitors is not raw intensity but chronic proximity — a monitor inches from a baby’s head vs mounted across the room.

Our results vs published research

Published benchmarks line up with what we measured:

  • Smart Cam (20 cm, McKenzie 2024): 0.32–0.85 mW/m² averages.
  • Baby Monitor (1 m, EMF-Portal): ~0.42 mW/m² average.
  • High Exposure Homes (Setia 2025): median ~8.66 mW/m², high tertile ~32 mW/m².
  • ICNIRP Public Limit: 10,000 mW/m².

The bottom line

Your choice of monitor matters. Where you put it matters more.

  • At 2′, the spread across monitors is real: 0.43 for the Nanit at one end, 13.25 for the BabySense at the other.
  • At 5′, the good monitors sink toward background and even the loud ones drop sharply.
  • Your router and your phone outread all of them.
  • Switching wifi off is not the lever people think it is. The two monitors we could test both ways barely moved.

That last one is the whole reason this page exists. The Eufy E21 and the Momcozy BM04 both run with wifi on or off, so we measured each twice. The Eufy dropped from 4.35 to 3.91 with wifi off, about 10%. The Momcozy dropped from 15.9 to 10.99, about 31%, and that “wifi-free” reading is still 25 times the Nanit’s. Same hardware, same room, same meter. The protocol label on the box is not the thing driving the number.

Rule of thumb: keep any baby monitor at least 6 feet from your child’s head. That single step does more than any amount of comparing brand marketing claims.

Question 4: so… what monitor should I buy?

Alright, you have the full dataset and testing.

Taking into account EMF data AND which of these monitors are actually good across the other factors I’ve tested, here’s what I think is worthy buying.

If you want the monitor with the absolute lowest EMF ratings, you should go with Nanit. And, bonus, Nanit has been our top monitor pick for many years running—it’s what we’ve used most with our own kids.

Miku and Harbor, two other wifi monitors, also have low EMF levels and are very solid picks. Harbor, the new kid on the block in the wifi baby monitor space, is our up-and-coming pick with its dedicated parent unit and fallback to a local network if your wifi goes out.

If your heart is still set on a non-wifi baby monitor…

Step 1: reconsider. Because the options, when you try to find the center of the venn diagram between 1) lower EMF scores and 2) does not suck, you will find the middle is… kind of empty.

Step 2: Do NOT mount your non-wifi monitor close to your baby. Higher EMF levels need to be countered with distance.

Step 3: Do NOT buy Babysense monitor. Worst EMF ratings AND scored low in our best non-wifi baby monitor testing (our YouTube video here).

Step 4: Choose the Vtech (Amazon). Our top overall non-wifi pick AND much lower EMF readings that Babysense. Hellobaby had a lower reading at 5′, but… it’s unfortunately a POS on just about everything else.

Baby monitor EMF FAQs

Is there such a thing as an EMF-free baby monitor?

No. Any monitor that sends video or audio from one room to another is transmitting on a radio frequency, and a radio frequency is EMF. Monitors marketed as “EMF-free,” “zero radiation,” or “no emissions” are describing a lower emission or a different transmission mode, not the absence of one. The closest thing to a true zero is a hardwired monitor running video over a cable, which exists but is rare, expensive, and a pain to install. Everything we measured registered above an empty room. The lowest was the Nanit Pro at 0.43 mW/m² peak at two feet, against a background of 0.059.

Do non-wifi baby monitors have lower EMF than wifi ones?

Usually the opposite, in our testing. The five lowest readings all came from wifi monitors: Nanit (0.43), Miku (0.57), Harbor (0.68), Owlet (0.74), and Cubo AI (0.94). The highest came from non-wifi and dual-mode units, with BabySense at 13.25 and the Momcozy BM04 averaging 11.84. We also tested two monitors in both modes. The Eufy E21 read 4.35 with wifi on and 3.91 with it off. The Momcozy read 15.9 on and 10.99 off. Turning wifi off moved them by 10% and 31%, and both stayed at least nine times the Nanit. Non-wifi monitors typically transmit on DECT or FHSS at close to continuous duty, while a good wifi monitor sends compressed data in short bursts and can aim its antenna away from the crib. “No wifi” describes the protocol, not the power.

Do baby monitors emit EMF at all?

Yes, every wireless one does. The question worth asking is how much. Across 11 monitors we measured peaks from 0.43 to 13.25 mW/m² at two feet. For scale, the FCC’s public exposure limit is 10,000 mW/m², a wifi router two feet away measured 18.30, and a phone held against your head measured 15.19. The single highest reading we recorded from any monitor was 15.9, from the Momcozy running wifi-only, and that’s still 629 times below the federal limit.

What is the Nanit baby monitor EMF exposure level?

The Nanit Pro measured 0.43 mW/m² peak at two feet, the lowest of any monitor we tested, with a sustained average of 0.051. That’s about 23,000 times below the FCC public exposure limit and roughly seven times an empty room. Nanit says its directional wifi antenna keeps the signal pointed away from the baby, and the meter supports that. We still recommend the floor stand or wall mount so the unit sits several feet from your baby’s head.

What is the Owlet baby monitor’s EMF exposure level?

The Owlet camera measured 0.74 mW/m² peak at two feet, with a sustained average of 0.084. That’s fourth-lowest of the 11 monitors we tested, just behind Harbor and well under non-wifi units like BabySense (13.25) and VTech (5.21). This figure covers the camera only, not the sock.

Does the Owlet sock emit radiation?

Less than you’d think, and probably not from where you think. The sock doesn’t talk to your phone or your wifi network. It talks to the Base Station a few feet away over Bluetooth Low Energy, which transmits at a small fraction of wifi’s power in short, infrequent bursts. The Base Station is the part that connects to your wifi, and it’s an ordinary wifi device sitting across the room rather than on your baby.

So the transmitter people worry about, the one actually on the foot, is the quietest link in the chain, and the one doing the real transmitting is the box on the dresser. We didn’t publish a number for the sock because a peak-hold meter pointed at a BLE device would most likely sit at background, and that reads as “below what this meter resolves” rather than “emits nothing.” We’d rather tell you where the signal actually comes from than put a zero next to it.

Are HelloBaby monitors safe?

HelloBaby measured 5.12 mW/m² peak at two feet with a sustained average of 0.82, roughly 12 times the Nanit and near the bottom of our rankings. It’s still about 1,950 times below the FCC public exposure limit, so it’s safe by any regulatory standard. It is not a low EMF monitor, and it performed poorly enough on everything else in our non-wifi testing that we don’t recommend it regardless of the number.

What is the BabySense baby monitor’s EMF level?

At 13.25 mW/m² peak at two feet, BabySense was the highest headline figure of any monitor we tested, with a sustained average of 4.31. That’s 30 times the Nanit‘s peak and 85 times its sustained average. It’s still 755 times below the FCC limit, so this isn’t a safety alarm. It’s a value judgment: BabySense sells against wifi monitors on emissions and reads worse than all of them.

What is the VTech baby monitor’s EMF level?

Our top non-wifi pick on features and reliability, the VTech, measured 5.21 mW/m² peak at two feet with a sustained average of 1.88. That’s about 12 times hotter than the Nanit. If you want a non-wifi monitor, this is the one to get. Just don’t get it thinking you’ve lowered your exposure.

What is the Harbor baby monitor’s EMF level?

Harbor measured 0.68 mW/m² peak at two feet with a sustained average of 0.072, third-lowest in our testing and close enough to the Nanit that the gap doesn’t matter in practice. Harbor is also the only monitor here with a dedicated parent unit that falls back to a local network when your wifi drops.

What is the Miku baby monitor’s EMF level?

The Miku Pro measured 0.57 mW/m² peak at two feet with a sustained average of 0.133, second-lowest of the monitors we tested. Miku sells the same monitor under two names right now, so you’ll see it listed as both the Miku Pro and the Miku AI Baby Monitor. Either way it uses radar-based breathing detection with no wearable, so there’s nothing on the baby at all.

What is the Cubo AI baby monitor’s EMF level?

Fifth-lowest in our testing, Cubo AI measured 0.94 mW/m² peak at two feet with a sustained average of 0.102, under every non-wifi unit we measured.

What is the Arenti baby monitor’s EMF level?

Arenti measured 2.27 mW/m² peak at two feet with a sustained average of 0.244. That’s mid-pack, about five times the Nanit, but still below every non-wifi monitor we tested and roughly 4,400 times below the FCC limit.

What is the Eufy baby monitor’s EMF level?

The Eufy E21 runs in both wifi and non-wifi modes, so we measured it in each. With wifi on it read 4.35 mW/m² peak at two feet; with wifi off, 3.91. Its headline figure, averaging the two modes, is 4.13 with a sustained average of 0.261, which lands it seventh of 11. The E21 is the cleanest illustration of the pattern in this data: switching off wifi moved it by about 10%.

What is the Momcozy baby monitor’s EMF level?

We measured the Momcozy BM04 in three isolated modes: 15.9 mW/m² peak at two feet on wifi, 10.99 on non-wifi, and 8.63 running both. Its headline figure, averaging those, is 11.84 with a sustained average of 0.331, second-highest of the monitors we tested. The non-wifi mode is the number that matters: at 10.99 it’s still about 25 times the Nanit.

Does the SNOO emit EMF?

The SNOO measured 1.86 mW/m² peak in contact with the bassinet itself, with a sustained average of 0.096. (our review here) Contact is a much harsher test than the two-foot readings we used for the monitors, so the comparison isn’t apples to apples. At that reading it sits roughly 5,400 times below the FCC public exposure limit.

Does the Cradlewise emit EMF?

Cradlewise measured 0.68 mW/m² peak in contact with the unit, with a sustained average of 0.037. Like the SNOO, this is a contact reading rather than a two-foot one, which makes it a tougher test than the monitor figures above. It’s about 14,700 times below the FCC public exposure limit.

How far should a baby monitor be from the crib?

Six feet is the number we use. RF power density falls off with the square of the distance, so doubling the gap cuts exposure to a quarter. Our five-foot readings show it: the wifi router dropped from 18.30 to 7.70 just by backing up three feet, and the good monitors sank toward background. Distance does more work than brand choice does, which is why the placement advice matters more than the ranking above.
